Moros y Cristianos - Moors and Christians
The famous Moors and Christians fiesta is celebrated in many town and cities
in Spain. In the 8th century, Spain was conquered by the Moors and according to popular tradition the festivals
commemorate the battles between the Moors and Christians during the period known as Reconquista when Spain was
re-conquered by the Christians in 1492.
For several days local people take part in the festival parade in
colourful costumes, usually handmade and inspired by Medieval fashion. Christians dress in fur, wear metallic
helmets and armour. In contrast, Moors wear ancient Arab costumes and carry scimitars. The
festival develops among shots of gunpowder, medieval music and fireworks and ends with the Christians winning a
simulated battle around a castle. It is always a wonderful spectacle full of tradition, rituals, music, gun powder
and ceremonial costumes and a celebration for all the family to enjoy.
This fiesta is held on various dates in most major towns in Spain, the
