Feria de Mayo - May Fair
Feria de
Mayo, May Fair, is one of the biggest annual fiestas in Torrevieja attracting crowds of up to
300,000. It is held in the first week of May to celebrate Andalucian music and dance.
Throughout the week the attractions include processions of horses, wine tasting and flamenco dancing.
"Casetas" (small tents) are erected where you can eat and drink and watch local people in
traditional costumes dancing on small stages. |

The week's festivities begin on Tuesday
which is traditionally reserved for the stallholders and known as ‘fish night’ as they all enjoy a fish
supper and a few glasses of wine before the next four days and nights of partying. On Wednesday evening the
Mayor of Torrevieja officially opens the fair with dancing on the stage accompanied by local music bands and there
are more exhibitions of music and dance on Thursday and Friday. Following a morning mass on Saturday,up to
400 traditionally dressed participants on horses and horse drawn carriages set off from the Church of the
Immaculate Conception in the centre of Torrevieja and parade through the town to the
fairground.
A bullring is set up next to the fairground
where participants display their equestrian skills from midday until around 4 pm. Entrance is free but
this event is extremely popular with the Spanish and seating is limited so arrive early if you want to
attend. Sunday is the final day with another spectacular horse parade and trick riding at midday in
the bullring and the fair comes to a close on Sunday evening, closing with the usual, spectacular firework
display.
This is one of the
most enjoyable fiestas of the year and almost always takes place in the first week of May but check local press for
dates. There are plans to eventually move the location of this
fiesta from behind the
fairground in Torrevieja to a site near the Aquapolis Water Park.
