Fuentes de Algar - Algar
Waterfalls
Fuentes del Algar or Algar Waterfalls are situated 2.5 km from the village of
Callosa d’Ensarria, high up in the mountains behind Altea.

The area is a beautiful natural park, the Algar riverside being very well maintained with pathways along the
various waterfalls and natural pools. The walk up to the waterfalls begins by passing the bars and restaurants
lining the route The waterfalls are accessed through a bar/restaurant and as you enter you begin to feel the
vibrantly fresh mist filled air and hear the amazing sound of the cascading water. A dozen steps down will bring
you to the main pool into which the largest of the waterfalls cascades. Many people have a swim in the fresh
mountain waters but do remember that the water is icy cold even in the summer months.

A small wooden bridge has been erected across this pool to enable you to climb
the steps up to the top. There are an additional set of steps behind the restaurant, which, although quite steep,
are worth climbing to see the main cascade under rushes, oleanders and fig trees. At the top of the valley, a
wide-open space has been set out with barbeques, tables, benches, toilets and showers.
There are numerous parking areas with trees or carports offering ample shade,
parking is around 3 euros, redeemable when buying food or drink in the bar adjoining the parking area. Other areas
of interest are also sign-posted within the park, a small train museum and an ‘arboretum’ containing Mediterranean
spice plants, aromatic essence of oils and perfumes and another two museums, the Environment Museum and the Water
Museum. There is also a cactus garden nearby.
